- Apply your electricity price and compare equivalent cooking tasks rather than wattage alone.
How the calculation works
Electricity (kWh) = electrical input watts ÷ 1,000 × operating hours. Energy cost = kWh × tariff. Rated power assumes continuous draw unless adjusted to a measured average.
Example
An average input of 2,000 W over 45 minutes uses 1.5 kWh and costs $0.30 at $0.20/kWh. A higher nameplate wattage does not mean the elements remain on for all 45 minutes.
Factors affecting the result
- Preheating, opening the door and oven insulation affect cycling.
- Batch cooking changes energy per portion even when total energy rises.
- This electric estimate does not include gas consumption or establish safe cooking time.
Frequently asked questions
Can I compare an oven with an air fryer?
Yes, by comparing measured energy for the same quantity cooked to the same outcome. Comparing rated watts alone misses runtime and cycling.
Does lowering temperature by 10% lower energy by 10%?
Not necessarily. Heat loss, preheating and cooking time all change. The calculator does not model oven temperature control.
