What this means

Compare rated extraction capacity at the relevant test conditions, not the collection bucket size.

Show calculation
  1. ENERGY STAR capacity guidance for up to 2,000 ft² and Damp conditions.
  2. 1 US pint = 0.473176 L.

Important notes

Guideline-based range, not a moisture-load calculation. Temperature, leakage and moisture sources affect performance.

Repair leaks first. Dehumidifier capacity is water removed per day, not reservoir capacity.

Calculation basis: Guideline-based capacity estimate

Dehumidifier capacity means how much moisture a unit can remove per day under its test conditions. It does not mean the size of its collection bucket. Use room area and observed dampness to identify a starting capacity class, then check operating-temperature limits and drainage arrangements.

How to use

  1. Enter the floor area of the space to be dehumidified.
  2. Select the dampness description that best matches conditions before treatment.
  3. Compare the capacity range in liters or US pints per day with current product ratings.

How the calculation works

Formula

Capacity is selected from ENERGY STAR area-and-dampness guidance, not derived from a humidity mass-balance equation. Liters/day = US pints/day × 0.473176.

Example

For a room under 2,000 ft² that is slightly to moderately damp, ENERGY STAR lists a 20–30 US pint/day range, approximately 9.5–14.2 liters/day. Wetter conditions call for a different capacity band.

Factors affecting the result

  • A cold basement can reduce moisture removal relative to laboratory ratings.
  • Leaks and moisture entering through the building may exceed what a portable unit can manage.
  • The published large-room guidance gives minimums, so an upper value is not a universal sizing limit.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 30-pint unit a 30-pint bucket?

No. The rating describes daily moisture removal under test conditions. Bucket capacity is a separate specification.

Will a larger dehumidifier repair damp walls?

No. Address water entry and ventilation problems at their source. Capacity selection does not diagnose why the room is wet.
