Annual label energy is the recommended starting input because it incorporates standardized cycling. A watts-and-duty-cycle estimate is a fallback when a label or measured energy figure is unavailable.
How to use
- Prefer annual kWh from the energy label and enter your current electricity price.
- If using the alternate mode, enter operating watts and the estimated share of time drawing that power.
- Compare annual cost and average daily and monthly figures; these are averages, not seasonal forecasts.
How the calculation works
Label mode: annual cost = annual kWh × tariff. Duty-cycle mode: annual kWh ≈ watts ÷ 1,000 × 24 × 365 × duty fraction. Monthly average = annual total ÷ 12.
Example
A refrigerator rated at 400 kWh/year costs $80/year at $0.20/kWh. That is an average of about $6.67/month or $0.22/day.
Factors affecting the result
- Room temperature, door opening, loading and seals change real electricity consumption.
- The duty-cycle approximation can omit defrost heaters, fans and standby loads.
- An energy label is a standardized estimate; a suitably rated electricity monitor can measure your actual use.
Frequently asked questions
Should I use the yearly dollar figure on the label?
Use the annual kWh and apply your own tariff. The printed dollar figure assumes a particular electricity price.
Why not multiply rated watts by 24 hours?
That assumes full power all day. A refrigerator compressor cycles or varies speed, so the calculation usually needs a duty fraction or measured average input.
